FGT comissioning & software

Minutes:
- Stephen reported he can generate peds+status tables for arbitrary run. The strip QA criteria are based on the pedestal shpe, will evolve. Jan added: later one may incorporate absence of signal as yet more QA step.
- There is discussion between Renee & Stephen what should be used as key in the offline DB for FGT. They will tell us what has been decided.
- Ramiro reported he exercised changing of APVs peds or all but one assembly
- Action item: fix not responding assembly 13, RDO=0, ARM=1, GRP=1 (serving 3DA) before STAR close donw on Friday
- no furtehr APV ped changes will be done until a decision is made we want them at a different place than for run 13016031
- tenatively we want peds to be 3 sigma above zero for the lowest pedestal in given APV chip
- Action item: find peds +RMS for run 13016031, Jan+Stephen
- Action item: Jan asked Ramiro for a series of 6 runs taken with varied pedestals level in selected APVs to verify the gross mapping in DB, details are here
- Len presented the first stab in to understanding of the time structure of FGT pulses based on the cosmic data. It was welcome we see the raw shapes. It was not so clear if shape params extracted from the cosmic stand data can be used to decide how to set the timing for STAR daq runs. We certainly need to develope the tools analyzing those shapes before we will look at the STAR daq data. Len will continue, implementing the following:
- exclude bad strips
- Action item: Stephen, can you please generate list of bad strips for this one cosmic data file we all play and hand it to Len
- modify the fit function to allow varied T0 for every pulse - this should improve chi2/dof
- apply constrain for the amplitude shape parameter for all (many) strips served by the same APV for all events - those will be one of the outputs used to decided which APV setting are the best
- verify if sturated shapes (fig 8) are perhaps associated with a specific hardware
- current method of finding pedestal as {min ADC} over 5 data values could be replaced by the actual pedestals comming out of the same code producing the status tables.
- Jan asked to not ask Len to do anything else until we have fully functional tool finding timing shapes.

- Ramiro and Willie are comissioning now (3pm) automatic generation of raw spectra plots using Willie's software
- JPlot - awaiting update of plots as discussed earlier, no new plots were requested
- HV GUI, 3 buttons: Paul reported on existing features of HV GUI (see HN mail),
- Action item: Paul agreed to add the off/standby/run buttons within a week, to be ready by January 25, if we decide soon and do not ask for ferrari
- Action item: FGT folks need to agree what those buttons should do (and do not ask for too much), Jan sent proposal to fgt-hn , please comment within a ~day
- SOFTWARE meeting :
- Action item: Tuesday meetings will be discontinued, instead commissioning + software meeting will be held on Wednesday
- it was understood software needed to evaluate pp200 data sets is critical, no clear plan what would it do and who would it develope, Anslem will continue thinking about it tomorrow
- Anselm will evaluate cluster finder he developed using geant tracks

c) There has been a lot of discussion on numbering of the HFT
detector elements (on and off the list). I will post by noon
all relevant documents (STAR note, SSD, PXL etc). There is
agreement in most items but minor things are still to be
defined. We should probably write this up as an addendum to
the STAR note csn229B.

Milestones for FGT comissioning are :
- ***DONE*** demonstarted 90% of channels work before collossions (pedestals are healthy)
- ***DONE*** FGT hold 3.6kV w/ ArCo2 gass
- demonstarted 90% of channels still work when beam circulates
- timing is set
- mapping in offline DB is correct
- set workig point for pp500
FGT commissioning tasks ver 2 (time ordered, [M]- denotes a milestone)
13) study of FGT working point : multiple data sets, ~2 days per set, considered combinations:

Minutes:
- overview of commissioning plan, revision follows (draft schedule in attachment, obsolete), main conclusions:
- significant # of tasks can and should be accomplished before the first collisions - see green section
- analysis of ped+stat of one taken already run should proceed now
- we do not have schedule with dates & names, I'll not give up on this
- there are 4 people who will be allowed to operate FGT HV are: Benrd,Gerrit,Ross,Ramiro
- handling of FGT operation in to STAR crew is a very distant idea, the plan is this 4 people will support fgt operation on site as long as it is needed
- finding the collision signal in FGT data is perceived as very difficult (shown in red)
- it is safer to require the EHT trigger (plan A), but also try to see FGT signal with minB trigger during EMC timing scan (very optimistic scenario)
- FGT deadtime in the early weeks is ~700 us, e.g. 7% dead @ 100 Hz.
- may require lower EHT thres and turn of HV for 3/4 of ETOW - need dedictaed trig config & EMC settings
- deveopement of not existing code fitting time dependence of individual pulses has been elevated to the top
- in parallel developement of nonexisting code fitting integrals will be pursued
- verification of mapping in DB will have 3 phases: quadrant, APV, and strip-level
- tuning of peds in APV will be done twice: ASAP, and after timing is adjusted
- not decided what FGT gas pressuer & HV will be set for study of the best working point (days-long data sets in pp200)
- analysis criteria were discussed: efficiency vs. HV; cluster size; efficiency vs. saturation of cluster energy; MIP signal to pedestal width;
- with disconnect to avaliable software - there is no code do generate any of those observables nor people to schedule to work on it
- identified need for software to evaluate signal/noise , needed to tune APV settings
- significant # of tasks can and should be accomplished before the first collisions - see green section
- the discussion about use of existing vs. developing new code was endless. People remained faithful to their respective views. In my opinin the comissioning task #16 - enableing ZS for pp500 - requires Willie to finish up the code he started. Many side benefits justify Willie does it now, not in a month.

- will FEE be on 24/7 : yes, said Gerard
- how do we deal with correlated noise : Gerard suspects it is not a big issue, we have ped file taken w/ STAR DAQ and a maker based software to compute sth. Limitted (to 1) possible manopwer. Analysis downgraded in priority, after code for items up to 13 is in hand.
- when do we switch to ZS mode? G: at the end of pp200.
- will we ever use wave form readout mode? G: we do it already.
